Was there last week- it is as close to New Orleans I feel of any city, which isn't for everyone, but is for me. History, architecture, hot in summer but pleasant the rest of the year. If you need to get to the beach plenty of incredible spots like Sullivan's Island which feels like you are going back in time. It relaxes me!
For a good place to live- North or South Carolina could be a nice fit. Charleston and Raleigh are great cities.
Have been to Charleston and I love it, just had a very good friend move to Charlotte last year - any intel on that city?
